The other day I was talking to a friend of mine. He’s a writer for one of these big sports websites — it rhymes with Shmantsand — and he’s kind of a star.
He publishes books and has a large Twitter following and people think he’s cool. I think he’s cool.
He hit me on Gchat and was like — “Hey man, what have you been up? Been writing at all?”
Which I thought was funny, because I’ve probably written 500 articles in the past year. I’ve had some huge stories — much bigger stories than he’s had. I’m not a slouch.
But he didn’t really know about any of it. Which was weird.
It’s not like we’re strangers. We follow each other on Twitter. Talk on email and chat. Interact on Facebook.
Come to think of it, maybe we are strangers.
“I write a lot on Medium,” I said.
“Oh cool, what the hell is that?” he asked.
He looked at the homepage.
“Wow, what the hell is this?” he asked.
I tried to explain it to him but he kinda sorta didn’t get it. I mean, he understood, but I’m not sure it really resonated. We’re friends — or I think we’re friends, because we talk on social media — so he checked out a few things I’ve published here.
I also sent him a few things from elsewhere. Again, I’m not a slouch.
Then he was just like okay cool man, talk to you later.
The interaction was interesting to me because it kinda supports a theory I have that most people are too busy to keep up with whatever it is you’re doing. They have their own lives and can’t be expected to sit around and click every link you post to Twitter.
On the one level it’s like, great, big deal, but on another it is disappointing because you tend to think you’re doing good work and you’d like your peers to be checking it out, but it turns out that most of them aren’t.
It could just be me, but I don’t know.
Anyway. I wish more people looked at stuff.
I don’t think you can rely on social media to do your work for you. You have to put it in front of people directly. Which can be annoying — especially when you write 500 pieces a year — but still, you have to do something.
Anyway. Working on some big stuff now and hopefully people see it. If they don’t, they don’t. Oh well. Fuck them.
