The thing about writing is that nobody cares if you do it. It’s kind of like stand-up comedy, acting, or even music. You’re only as good as the last thing you did, and even that -- you’ve got to get out there and do it again for anyone to really pay attention. The minute you stop, the minute you sit back and think hmm, this feels like it for me, that’s all the time it takes for someone else to step in and fill the space that you’ve willingly given up. It’s not all that dissimilar from any other job. If you were a teacher, you couldn’t just stop coming to school because you were done teaching what you needed to teach. You’d get fired for that shit. And I’m not saying breaks aren’t warranted, because they are. A little down time goes a long way. You recharge, get new ideas, get back to it. But…it’s a job. Sucks to say that, but it is. And you’ve got to just keep showing up. That’s the only way to make sure you get better, and more importantly the only way to make people remember who you are.
