Thanks for Reading All These Years

Over the last few months, my Medium readership has taken a complete nosedive. I wondered why, and thought: either it’s because I briefly stopped publishing and readers forgot about me (possible), Medium has become more popular and thus crowded out the little person (plausible), or because… shit, I honestly have no clue.

To find out, I began looking at my stats. Seems my popularity peaked years ago, before everyone who ever had a single thought in their head began throwing their words up here on this site. I was also writing a lot about pop culture at the time; but then, my personal stories were also viewed in reasonably high numbers. So, it didn’t make sense.

And yet my most-read story is one from earlier this year, a simple post aptly titled — “Don’t Be Afraid to Be Simple.” Within a few months it should pass 100k views, which isn’t bad for something that took all of ten minutes to write. With Medium’s partner program, the story has even earned me a few bucks. Not a lot but enough to make me think maybe if I did that a few more times I could carve out a nice middle-class life for myself… in Thailand.

Still, people are reading. It isn’t always a lot but it’s probably still more than the average person with an internet connection. To know that each months you’re getting a solid 10 thousand, 20 thousand, 30 thousand people checking in, reading things you wrote one morning while you sipped your coffee, or sat up late in a hotel bed jotting down while your wife slept next to you, or you tapped out on your phone while you were cooking dinner — that’s powerful.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you all for the years of reading and say it’s been great. Even with the decline in readership, which probably has less to do with me than things that are beyond my control, my expectations have always been pretty low and it’s been fun writing whatever I feel and having people absorb that. On the average day I’d say about two people give a shit what anyone really has to say — and that’s your mother and your significant other (if you are lucky to have one, and even luckier to have one who actually cares). To be read is a wonderful thing and it’s deeply appreciated.
