Pretty Cool Song: The Anxiety “Meet Me at Our Spot”

I’m told by the internet that this song — by Willow Smith and Tyler Cole, collectively calling themselves The Anxiety — is apparently big now. It came out in March of 2020, but fell by the wayside until it was rediscovered (or, more likely, their label began promoting it) via TikTok.

Dubbed “Meet Me at Our Spot,” it’s an angsty punk rock tune that sounds like it was made in 2007. And I have to say, I discovered it on Spotify, sandwiched into one of those “hits” playlists, where every song sounds the same. It came on when I was driving, and sounded so out of place — in a good way — that I had to check my phone to make sure it was still, in fact, playing Spotify.

Right from the start, the lyrics draw you in, projecting and capturing the aimlessness of youth.

When I wake up
I can’t even stay up
I slept through the day, fuck
I’m not getting younger
But when I’m older
I’ll be so much stronger
I’ll stay up for longer
Meet me at our spot

This is sung in a fairly straightforward manner, over a simple bass groove and steady drum beat. After the last line, the melody shifts, explosively, but the instrumentation only changes slightly. The harmonies build in the background, and the song suddenly feels as if its spinning out control — but that groove just keeps playing.

“Caught a vibe,” Willow belts out. “Baby, are you coming for the ride?”

Shit, you know I am.
