Hey Elizabeth. Hope all is well.

Question: Is anything being done to help individual writers on here? Or is it all publication-focused now?

From what I’m seeing, it looks like the latter, which is fine — I get it — but if true, should probably be stated explicitly as such. That way, the smaller writers, the little people, don’t waste their time plugging away here.

I mean, I’m only asking because I, myself, have something like 18 thousand followers. In the grand scheme of things, that’s not a ton, but probably more than most.

People are certainly reading my work here, but the verticals I once contributed to, they no longer appear to have money. I’d like to go back to making money with Medium. So, without launching my own self-funded publication, are any of these new tools going to help me do that?

Alternatively, there are all these announcements about publications joining Medium. Some of them, the ones I’m fortunate enough to personally know people at, I’ve had conversations about joining in some professional capacity or another.

Whether that will happen, who knows. But in the case that it doesn’t, how can I talk to someone, or get information on working with these publications? And how can other people get that information?

I’m just speaking honestly here. There are a lot of people who have been hanging around this site for the better part of 3 years, putting the content on it that has gradually turned it into something.

Some of them would like the opportunity to begin turning their work into dollars. All this new stuff seems to aimed at allowing other people — ones who’ve had no involvement with Medium — to begin cashing in, immediately.

Which is… odd.

This is a particular concern for me, especially in New York’s small, insular media circle, because I’ve been writing on Medium since 2013, and people legitimately believe I work for the company when I do not.

So, I’m just trying to assess — like, is anything being done for the individual here? How does any of this benefit them, if at all? And if not, can you kinda just say that?
